Andropause
Much in the same way women experience a decrease in hormone levels as they age, men experience a decrease in testosterone levels as well. This is commonly referred to as andropause. Unlike women, however, men do not have a clear signal like the cessation of menstruation to indicate this transition. Although a drop in testosterone levels will occur in all men over a period of time, it is difficult to predict which men will experience a decline severe enough to seek medical attention.
According to some researchers, it is estimated that as many as 25 million American males are experiencing some level of male andropause today. Like menopause, andropause has many severe symptoms such as mood swings, fatigue, loss of energy and sexual drive, increased upper and central body fat, erectile dysfunction, and a reduction in physical agility. Furthermore, there is some indication that the reduction in testosterone levels can increase a man’s risk of osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease.
While not a new phenomenon, andropause is garnering more attention due to an increased interest in men’s aging among medical researchers and improved diagnosing technology. While not appropriate for all men, under the supervision of a health care provider and a qualified pharmacist, compounded testosterone replacement therapy may be an effective and beneficial treatment option. Compounded bio-identical hormone replacement therapies for men have the same variety of options as compounded products for women in terms of dosage strength, delivery system, and flavors.
Our Apothecary by Design pharmacists can work with your health care provider to create a compounded hormone replacement therapy based on your individual symptoms and needs. Learn more about our services here or contact us if you would like a complimentary consultation with our clinical staff.
