Normal Conception
Pregnancy is the result of a process that has many steps. To get pregnant:
- A woman’s body must release an egg from one of her ovaries (ovulation).
- The egg must go through a fallopian tube toward the uterus (womb).
- A man's sperm must join with (fer¬tilize) the egg along the way (fertilization).
- The fertilized egg must attach to the inside of the uterus (implantation).
Infertility can occur if there are problems with any of these steps.
Normal conception is most likely to occur when intercourse takes place around the time of ovulation. In a woman’s normal 28-day cycle, this window of opportunity takes place around day 14. However, as cycles may be either shorter or longer than the “average” 28-day cycle, it is sometimes difficult to precisely predict ovulation time. More accurate ovulation timing can be determined with the help of an ovulation monitor.
